'How to make Victoria Sponge' is filled with different ingredients.
There is faith, humour, bullying and mental disorders all mixed into a week in the life of the Sponge family.
Underlying all of this is God's plan to show Victoria that her life is linked with Holy Week. A revelation that is disclosed as each night prayer is offered up.
Through this book we can be encouraged to pray the 'yes' prayer each day, offering up our day to God at the beginning when the sun rises. Our day need not be devoid of prayer, but instead enriched by bringing everything in a conversation to God as and when it happens. When we are told to pray unceasingly as in 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 "Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you" this is precisely what Victoria Sponge does and what the book is all about.
So why use a fictional family; why not use factual evidence to show how Lent is lived out in our family life?
The answer to this is that I was called one morning at 5 am by God to write a story. Jesus loves stories and He is a great story teller. When Jesus wanted to impress a particular point he used a parable. He used known instances that His followers could identify with and then he explained its meaning according to the Kingdom of God. By writing this book as a story, I believe God used me to highlight the known challenges that face our families in a comical and at times painful way, to bring about His understanding in these areas.
